I also would not like to have to change versions. Changing the URL only allows me to change one line quickly. Changing each version of each feature group is more work and more error prone. And when speaking about tests, isn't it possible to verify that each URL is not a composite repo?

+1 There is a new option in Gerrit that is like Cherry Pick but a bit better called Rebase if necessary. It basically allows to avoid merges but also keep track of patchset dependencies, unlike the Cherry pick option which ignores any patchset dependencies and can sometimes cause problems.
