Right, problem verified to be caused by the XMP files.
As I remove these and the images appears ok in DT.
I have likely stumbled on these earlier too,
e.g. when running "darktable-generate-cache" (just recently, swapped
harddrive - in regenerating cache)
and then not been able to determine whe
