You can try a test.
1. Copy a folder - together with the side cars to a test location and
then import it. Everything should be properly populated. If it works
well - then you will know that you can import normally. I have removed
images before many times and re import without issues.

If I am in darktable - I would enable the film strip from preferences.

I was probably not clear. This D800 curve is in darktable I have
contributed it 2 years ago. A bit over exposed is maybe because you
have a D810 and not a D800,

Is there a way of comparing 2 or 3 images side by side? It's to
decide on which image to select...
I did set the images to 2 in the file manager, but:
1. This is almost OK if the images are size by side
2. I can't compare at more than the 'standard size'
