If I need to lighten shadow areas of an image without blowing out
brighter areas, I generally use the "Shadows and Highlights" module --
it is usually just a matter of turning it on and adjusting the "shadows"
slider.

Hi,
Besides the shadows and highlights module that has already been suggested,
you could add a second instance of exposure, masked so windows are
excluded. Use the first instance to get the windows properly exposed, the
second one to fix the room's exposure.
