There's always multiple ways to do this but I like the zone system plugin
myself.
a) It generally gives very pleasing and much more predictable results than
playing with curves.
b) You can see what image portions are in the zone(s) you are adjusting

can you please send a screenshot so that I can see if the grey colors are
really that light grey or if it is a miscalibration of your screen? In this
case you won't have much fun with darktable since you could never set the
right colors...

My apologies for the very basic question. I just installed darktable and
found that many of the buttons in the user interface have a light gray
color, while the text on the buttons is only slightly darker. In this way
buttons cannot be read.

these graphs look broken. are you profiling developed raws? or jpgs? make
sure there are no other files in a new empty directory but your raws..
especially no xmp files. oh, and maybe make sure darktable has no output
profile override set in the export module when you close it before running
gen-pr

what is the closest alternative to exposure plugin that works with masks?
I have a picture where the background is overexposed and when lowering down
the exposure I can see a lot of details. The foreground on the other hand
is initially properly exposed.
I would like to lower down the exposure on
wow, never touched "zone system" before -> it looks very good for this
selective exposure work.
Will give a try to new git version of darktable too (to check the exposure
plugin with masks)
