whenever you switch images/exit dr mode the thumbnail is updated (see the
output with the timings marked [thumbnail]).

I don't think so. That would apply to the lighttable mode, but in
darkroom mode the thumbnails are not used, the pipeline is executed
anyway.

My 6-core i9, openSUSE linux, darktable-1.7.0.1434033150.e78a048, takes >3

It takes about one a second to switch to the next image in Darktable mode.
Images are ~5000x3000 jpegs, CPU is 4-core i7, OS X 10.9.5, Darktable 1.6.6
Here are the log entries that I found interesting:
