the thumbnails are not stored in the library but in
~/.cache/darktable/mipmaps-* (separately for every db you might be using).
no idea about macintosh computers.

Well, the library is a sqlite database. If something is broken, it could be
the db engine. Just trying to help.

If you use the git-master version, sometimes the changes are not compatible
with the old database and then DT recreates it from scratch.

Whenever i start darktable, many of the thumbnails have to regenerate. i've
often tried waiting for all of the thumbnails to generate only to have them
blank again after i quit and start darktable again.
what am i change to make sure that the thumbnails are retained?
