This certainly won't be changed for Etch and Joey Hess has provided
various reasons why it should not be changed at all.
From his last words on this (Beeping could work..) I seemed to understand

Here's a patch that:
- adds two beeps when prompt is displayed
- sets timeout to 5 minutes
Unfortunately I can't test it right now, since it needs real hardware and I
run out of blank CDs. I'll try this sunday if nobody beats me to it.
Btw, if someone wants to

Tagging wontfix instead of closing as we may want to reconsider this

It's a realistic scenario for the he.net datacenter. They couldn't hear

syslinux supports beeping (by printing ^G or with the .beep command specified

Please do set a timeout in syslinux screen. Even if it's a very high one.
Since sparc already has 600/10 s as timeout, I propose the same for x86.

CD booting is not the default, like it is on many x86

D-I doesn't touch anything until told to does it?

My gut feeling says not to change this.
If your keyboard does not work during initial boot stages, there is
obviously something structurally broken anyway as it means you can also
not do any BIOS setup. I'd suggest such a user should get an AT keyboard
somewhere and fix his BIOS setup to
