Renicing saned doesn't renice xsane automatically. Renicing one process
influences only the future children. So your note is irrelevant.
Look at setpriority(...) and/or sched_yield().
Good example for any of the saned copies:

Your patches where forwarded but upstream instead choose to remove the
support for mpath in the latest release of iproute2 (v2.6.23-071016),
since it apparently was removed from the kernel.

The patch attached to this bug report has been forwarded upstream and is
now applied to the iproute2 repository, but has not yet made it into any
release.
Hopefully the next upstream release will contain the fix.
