Had the same problem. The problem first appeared when adding a repo to upgrade
from etch to lenny.
Removing everything and recreating empty directories in /var/cache/apt didn't

could be avoided for git-buildpackage if a tag of the upstream branch is done

I encountered a similiar problem in 1.4.9.1 on Ubuntu 8.04. It came
from a crashed database table ('statistics'). Im using MySQL as
database and was able to repair the table through PHPMyAdmin. Hope
this helps anybody with the same issue.
