I'm on squeeze and it had the same symptoms.
The patch didn't work for me either.
The fix proposed of replacing sb-impl with sb-unix solved the issue.

This problem was fixed in a later version of emacs23. My patch was
just a workaround. Since it's much easier to change git.el (provided
with the git-core pkg) than fiddling with emacs builtin VC support.

I had Emacs already open and installed the package later. I tried
loading the startup file /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50org-mode.el but I
got void variable 'flavor' error. Doing a C-h v with flavor doesn't
show flavor as being a bound symbol. Therefore the let
