but - at least for me - the problem only happens if I have a installation with
kde desktop with the default gnome desktop I have no such problem.
Unfortunately I can not switch to 'http' for all sources.

esprimo machine has ethtools installed and the wol is
enabled and set to g (magic packets) I'm not sure but as far as I know, there
is no action during the boot process to set/enabe the wol for the ethernet
device. So I assume, the settings are permanent to on.

BTW - Changing then SHELL variable in /etc/crontab from /bin/sh to /bin/bash
has no effect.
