It looks like my problems with the Dec 5 6 installer builds is due to the CD burner. The Dec 6 build (debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso 0faa173fe594afdb374944cfc6610743) doesn't exhibit the freezing behavior if I burn the CD from another machine so I need to do some investigation of that here.
