could it be that the bug is rather fixed because you increase the number
of characters cut checks for the domain name?
You mix in your patch some complex logic to determine stuff with the
minor change of setting these characters up to 40.
It is a known, but still unfixed bug in Xen upstream that
I checked, and got the reply that not this, but another fix of the long
domain names problem in xendomains has been incorporated in xen
unstable - see the bugzilla report.

BTW: a fix by h0lger is available in svn people/h0lger/softupdate-git-rpm.
When testing this to install rhel on a debian host via dirinstall, I
realized some more is to be done:
Holgers patch is enough when only running softupdate on a non-debian host.
But, when the target

I tracked down this problem:
as we removed HOST in the main fai script, we also removed the line in
fai-class which checked id HOST is set, and only if not, it set the
HOSTNAME from uname.
Now, always HOSTNAME is newly exported , even in dirinstall(where,
before, HOST way set), which makes the
Package: fai-client
Version: 3.2~beta4
So this doesn't get lost in private mail:
in the new beta versions the -u switch for giving an explicit hostname
for dirinstall doesn't work anymore - instead always the name of the
host fai is run on is used - which is in nearly no case what one wants
when
BTW: this has probably something to do with the changes happened in fai
around the HOST and HOSTNAME variables done in the first days of debcamp
between 10th and 20th of june 2007
probably the old setting should just be restored - or, all this
HOST/HOSTNAME handling should be better documented

This bug can be closed as soon as changset 4356 from the subversion
(changes in people/lazyboy/bugfixes/dirinstall-doc) is applied to the
trunk.
All other new undocumented features have their own bug number in the
meantime.
I forgot to add this bugnumber in the commit, sorry.

Please make the fai-cd mirror configurable, and automatically call
fai-mirror from fai.cd if oit not exists.
This saves users to have to call and remember multiple commands when
using fai-cd
(and add something like --rebuild-mirror)
