What I ended up doing was uninstalling the EFF's HTTPS-Everywhere Add-on
and now it doesn't freeze. N.b., I had had this Add-on disabled, but
only uninstalling it worked to solve the freezing.

It turns out the problem was that in my fstab, I had none instead of
defaults for the options for devpts. Apparently none is no longer
supported by mount, the kernel, or something else. It used to be...
