I can no longer reproduce the bug. I ran "apt-get install xorg", got all the
new packages, and brought up X windows with no problem. These are the same
packages that correlated with the problem a month ago, but for whatever
reason everything is fine now. Thanks.

I submitted this bug and now believe I identified the wrong package. I have
fixed my display by undoing these upgrades:
xorg 1:7.5+8 1:7.6+6
xserver-xorg 1:7.5+8 1:7.6+6
which also restored the older versions of 37 other xserver-xorg packages.
Those are now being held back by apt-get upgrade

Part 1: failure to install from CD (similar to bug #602380)
I've failed to do a fresh netinst of Squeeze from a CD on a new desktop. The
install hangs during "Select and install software". I looked at console 4
while it was hanging and saw 8-line kernel
This problem has been solved, and it was not a bug. I just noticed that my
keyboard has a key labeled "F Lock". If I toggle that key, the function keys
are interpreted correctly and I am able to bring up virtual terminals as
expected.
