mozilla.org ff), so I had a chance of doing some forensics instead of hosing the
crime scene.
I narrowed it down to /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/components/browser.xpt

No gnome stuff installed. KDE only.

Ok, so it sounds like this was an unrelated extension problem.
Confirmed. After removing everything from the extensions directory
(SwitchProxy) and XUL.mfasl Firefox works well.
Reinstallation of SwitchProxy rendered it unusable again.
