I can confirm Dimitris's report above. I also have my printer (HP Laserjet 4)
attached
to a parallel port on a remote host. When I print directly from the remote
host, it
prints okay. When I print from the local host, it fails with the following
entries
in the error_log

OK, another update and possibly resolution:
My CUPS setup consists of two servers. One runs on my day-to-day
workstation (no printers directly connected) and the other runs on a
print/file/etc server, which is where the Deskjet is connected. Both
are running unstable and CUPS 1.2.2-1.
