I have the same problem in stable (etch). Cannot do proftpd reload or
send a SIGHUP to proftpd.
# ps ax | grep proftpd
4190 ?Ss 0:00 proftpd: (accepting connections)

# kill -HUP 4190
# ps ax |grep proftpd

Proftpd is dying with a signal 11 on me every time I use the reload option
in the init script, e.g. from a logrotate script.
The syslog entries show:
