I start MuseScore and leave it at the page where it displays the default
"demo page" showing the score for "Pictures at an Exhibition".

and the problem disappeared...

I use Debian Unstable, with audacity 1.3.11, and do not experience this problem.
In fact, if I import a file called "audio.wav", and export to the same filename
the old file is first renamed "audio-old1.wav", and the new file is stored as
"audio.wav".
