that Perl _always_ runs in taint mode no matter who is the owner and

Just a quick note that I've been able to reproduce the failure on the
license.test test on an i386 system as well, so it's apparently not
alpha-specific. I just ran pbuilder on the 1:5.7.3-1 source package twice in
a row, and it failed both times.

directory, and now there is no conflict with libsane. Probably it was
left there from some old and faulty upgrade or something...
