Joost asked about permissions on various directories. That led me to
the real problem: I had accidentally put the archives in
/var/lib/mailman/mailman/archives, not /var/lib/mailman/archives.
Fixing that fixed everything.

The fix as of now, if you're running sarge, is basically to get the gaim
backport from backports.org. The security team was aware of this issue
months ago, so it's up to them to release fixed packages.

I have prepared a NMU patch to fix this bug as a part of the T & S
portion of my NM application.
As described in the original problem report there were several fairly
trivial fixes required to to the init script.
1) Incorrect test when checking for valid service files - fixed by using
-z n
