I'll also point out that starting konqueror from the command line with
/usr/bin/konqueror causes everything to work, while running
/usr/bin/kfmclient openProfile filemanagement (the exec command from
/usr/share/applications/kde/Home.desktop) causes the issue to occur.

Hello Steve,
The new upstream version of gettext has improved checking of .po file
syntax, which unfortunately is causing a number of build failures in
unstable now. I'm filing this dummy bug to keep this version of gettext
from propagating to etch until we have a handle on the new build
