You can write your own plugin for Kopete pretty easily using the pipes plugin.
Pipe the incoming messages through your own script and render HTML.
I wrote a plugin to write messages upside down using this method [1], you
would probably need to extend that to cope with richtext input.

of automatic misspelling indication from KDE3 is back. Seems it was never
lost, just not available with ispell!

python-qt4 and python-sip4 builds are currently broken on i386 and after
upgrading to KDE4.4.2 the current python-qt4 package wouldn't work anymore.
Ways around this problem I currently see are (only reasonable ones):
- downgrade to kde4.4.1
- using Ubuntu packages
- building myself
