I've encountered a nasty bug in the drm/i915 part of Debian's stable kernel.
The code is also present in 2.6.33.20, which is the latest stable upstream
release of 2.6.33.y at the time of writing.

FWIW, I've rebuilt/backported the 3.2.6-1 kernel from testing for/to
stable (had to revert some changes in the python-based parts of the
Debian kernel build system to make them work with python 2.6) and we
can no longer reproduce the problem.

I wish they were! They are in X4? and X30? but not X200s, where I had to
remove the keyboard and handrest to get to the card. Most annoying.

First things first: I can confirm that linux-image-3.2.0-1-amd64 3.2.6-1
crashes too.
I've been able to capture the kernel messages using netconsole. The
messages start, accidentally, just in time to see the kernel assemble the

The sound has been stable for the last days without noises,
after applying % amixer -c0 set "Auto-Mute Mode" "Disabled"
It seems this has solved it, until further notice.
You might want to keep the bug open for a while,
so I can check with all the kernels (it works with latest).
