Good news, the problem might be hardware related.
With the daily installer from the 12th of February, and if
I only have three or fewer CPU inserted in the v440 initial boot and
network detection works!
It surprises me that with Solaris, or Debian Etch netboot,
I can use four CPU, but with daily

I will try that.
I will try removing three of the four CPU modules, and also to swap them
around.
I perhaps should note that the box runs well with Solaris 9, not sure if
that's any help.

the memory for each CPU)
it still comes up RED State Exception with the daily installer from
31st of January:
