[Advent bug squashing] newer bmtk version, and other niceties

Hi all, After some head scratching, bmtk is finally available in its new upstream version 1.0.8 in Debian sid. I took that opportunity to resolve two cases of double build failure (source and binary) that were #1043949 and #1049671, which were a bit more involved than usual. Also for today: *
