As an FYI, I wanted to chime in with a more reliable way to achieve your
desired results without using
`awk`.
You could "squeeze" the spaces in the output for `ls` to get a consistent
result from `cut`:
$ ls -l | tr -s ' ' | cut -f7
Of course, this may fall apart when you consider spaces
