then after successfully logging in
gnome-session
which leads me to this message
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display
What is it, and what can I do about it?

new 2.6.8 with the aforementioned changes to prom_init.c.
After doing the Option UseFBDev and Option sw_cursor changes to my X
