I just tried preparing a mips64el qemu image and booting that, but the
problem is not reproducible there: deb11u2 installs fine.
How should we proceed?

The fix depends on some corresponding changes to Emacs, in #1069943.
I manually tested the fixes using reproducers provided in the BTS and from
upstream. The fixes are already in unstable. I have uploaded to oldstable-pu.

Upstream do not seem interested in fixing it for the time being.

We haven't considered it. It would be a case of writing a script to

The scripts prioritise binary-NEW over source-NEW by default, though I

The Release Team's conception of RC bugs, and the text of Policy, are
generated and updated by different processes, for different purposes. I
think Debian benefits from that diversity of normative processes, and it
would harm that to try too hard to keep the output of the two processes
in perfect sync.

The FTP team can't check every single upload, so I guess that at some
point someone decided that checking every binary-NEW upload was a
sensible compromise.
More sophisticated filtering on what gets checked would probably be
pair of eyes look at your SONAME bump etc.

To expand on this, Emacs 25 was only released by upstream in September.

the version of Emacs
someone would get if they typed `apt-get install emacs`. It would
require a bug against ftp.debian.org to remove emacs24.
Even if we can't remove emacs24 for stretch thanks to the packages
you've highlighted, it would still be good to update emacs-defaults.

We should write this list down for the next time someone wants a new
archive section: https://wiki.debian.org/NewArchiveSections
I'm not involved much in the wiki so I'd be grateful if someone would
move/categorise this new page as appropriate.
-
- that package is also maintained by me
- that package does not actually need to be binNMUed to work with the new
libzxcvbn
Please forgive me if this is documented somewhere and I've missed it. I
want to make sure I don't violate the freeze.
Thanks.
