Neither 1.7 nor 1.8 fail in any other architectures, so I believe that this is a transient error particular to mipsel, related with Python support or dependencies. The package is largish and I think that rebuilding only in mipsel is the solution putting less strain in all of the buildd infrastructure, especially in these times with the frenzy of the freeze.
