couple of hypotheses about what could go wrong. Jeremy Nickurak's
hypothesis did the trickso people compiling kernel's under unstable

I just did a fresh install of woody and ximian gnome on my
laptop. Everything seems to be working fine, but when I try to login using
gdm it goes black like it's going into X and then goes right back to
gdm. No errors of any kind appear. I've checked all the logs including
the .xsession-erro

working first. Can someone suggest the program(s) I'll need for the
ethernet card? I'm using a Kingston brand and I assume there are
specific drivers, etc. for it.

you can try to compile a kernel that works correctly. Then make a bootdisk
to boot off the installation process (you might need the root disk on
floppy as well) and go on from there.

the CD boots up, it freezes after it detected the MegaRAID card (the line

You need to check your system log to see what is happening. I would do
following as root.
1. apt-get install mc
2. poke around /var/log with mc to see all what is happening.
3. check /etc/exim.conf especially around procmail.
