Does `aptitude -v` give relevant additional output? When in the
"Preconfiguring"-stage, does `ps aux` show something unusual?

iptables -L gives ACCEPT for all ( input, output, forward)
I always setup gateways with shorewall. First
you need to activate forwarding in /etc/shorewall/shorewall.conf
I haven't this file ?
and
then change /etc/shorewall/masq to suit your config.
