My thanks to several of you who responded to my post. You all corrected my mistake of thinking I could not specify the (preferred) /dev/ttySx in both gpm and the X-server. After correcting the config and rebooting I'm able to start and restart X without killing gpm. Regards, -- C.L. Daugaard
