Hi
I am trying to encode a cd with the package abcde and it is taking around 3
hours per track to do so!
Is this usual? Is there anyway I can speed this up. I have an up to date
Woody system, Athlon 1gig, 512 RAM so it shouldn't be this slow :)

My xterm looks the same - cdparanoia keeps bobbing up to the top of top every
minute or so and then disappearing again, the current track has been
recording now for over 4 hours...

Hi
I tried to do apt-get upgrade of my Woody system today and got the following

apt-get dist-upgrade should do the trick.
Hi, that did work but when unpacking this happens:

after upgrading my woody box to kernel 2.4.16 I now cannot run any x

Hi
yesterday i installed tomcat, apache, php and mysql from the testing sources

got php and mysql to work however I still have a problem here with tomcat.

Hi
I'm at the point of needing to get my apache/mysql/php4/tomcat environment up
and running on this new box. In the past I've always compiled these from
source downloaded from the various places. Is this the best method? This is

Apt sure beats compiling. Just do all at once, e.g., apt-get install

the mysql and php package names.
I did so and have found myself with a

Hi
many thanks for all the suggestions and help with my non-working nic. I
ended up sticking a cheap SMC card in the box and lo and behold it worked
first time... so I never did find out what was the problem with the netgear
but at least I now have a working system!
After I got past this
I have just installed VNC on a Linux box (Debian Woody) that I am going to
run without a monitor and keyboard. If I start the server on the Linux box
then I can log-in from windows and see the KDE desktop, however I needed to
be able to have it listening for connections so I have followed the

I'm a bit puzzled here. I have a new box here that I am installing Debian

set up a bare bones system and once I get onto the network I will
dist-upgrade to Woody.
However, I am using a Netgear FA310TX PCI card of

On the other hand if your ISDN Router is expecting a static IP and
eth0 is setup to use dhcp, then you probably should change it to use a
static IP in /etc/network/interfaces. Again, you will have to have
some good DNS servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf.
I have it set up with a static IP
How exactly are you pinging? Something like ping 192.168.0.XXX or ping
myhost.mydomain.com? What exactly are the results when you try?
neither work - my gateway for instance is 10.0.0.10
if I ping that (I then have to ctrl-C out of it):

I'm looking forward to being able to play with the new box I am getting for
Christmas. Its for a dedicated Debian installation and I'll be also running
KDE on it. At the moment I have a P133 with is running Debian (Woody)

What is a trackball good for?
why would I want one over a normal mouse?
I use a Logitech trackball because a few years ago I had my right hand
crushed and if I use a mouse, after a couple of hours I suffer excruiating
RSI type pain. Using the trackball I have no pain at all, so that's my
Hi I already have a working Apache, PHP, mySQL set-up on my Debian(Woody) box.
I'm looking to install Tomcat and found a tutorial which seems to say that

In your Monitor section of XF86Config-4, try putting:

I'm using XF86Config rather than XF86Config -4 as

How about X -configure ?

Hi
could you explain how I get the old packages ie: what i use in apt-get ?
That's a question I've been asking myself for quite a while. It looks
like the 3.3.6 packages have dependencies with the 4.x packages on my
sid-system. So my workaround is to get all the needed 3.3.6 packages
Hi
I still have an unresolved problem with XFree86.
If I try to startx using XF86Config-4 it gets to the point of adding mouse

peripherals in KDE2.2

I have been configuring via dpkg-reconfigure

difference to it starting up. Right now I'd just like to see it starting up
