Hi,
Is there iconv for Linux? If not, is there an equivalent?
Thanks,

Hi,
What package is the re-entrant development stuff in? I'm trying to
compile something that needs getpwuid_r. I seem to have getpwuid, but I
don't seem to have the re-entrant version.
Thanks,

Hi,
I somehow managed to get things in an annoying state. I've been trying to
install kde. I got the .deb files from the kde site and tried to install
them. Somewhere along the line things got screwed up. I had the wrong
version of qt installed (I had 1.40 and kde required 1.42) so things

Hi,
I downloaded netscape-base-45 and tried to install it. It says it depends
on netscape-base-4. Where is netscape-base-4? When I go to
ftp.debian.org under the non-free/binary-i386 tree and do 'ls */netscape*'
I get

Hi,
I just installed Debian Linux 2.1. I'm running on a 400MHz PII with 128M
RAM.
Everything seemed to install ok. However, when I reboot my machine it
says that xdm can't find a valid X configuration file and won't start. I
then log in as root and run xdm from the command line without problem
Hi,
I want to write some Java database stuff using postgresql. Are there any
simple examples laying around somewhere I could look at to see how it's
done?
Thanks,

Has anybody gotten this card to work?

Hi,
I got KDE 1.0 up and running. Installing the dev version of the libraries
and running ldconfig worked. Thanks to everyone who helped with that.
Now the next problem...
When I try to read any of the KDE man pages, the man page that comes up
says that the entry has no useful manpage. Is ther
alled it. Could
the uninstall have not deleted some files that it should have? If so, any
idea what they are?
Thanks,

Hi,
I tried to download KDE version 1.0 and install it using the Debian
packages. However, when I install it it can't find its libraries. They
install in /usr/X11R6/lib just like they're supposed to, but it can't find
them. The older version doesn't have this problem, but the KDE

Hi,
I was wondering how to use an image file as wallpaper under X. Is it
a window-manager specific thing? I've been trying to use fvwm2. I've
seen some screenshots on-line showing fvwm2 users with wallpaper but I
don't seem to be able to find where in the config files to set it up.
Thanks,
Ric

Hi,
I have a Real3D StarFighter AGP video card, which is based on the Intel
i740 chipset. Unfortunately this chipset is currently unsupported by
XFree86, at least it is according to their FAQ. The only place I've seen
that offers an X server for this chipset is XiG. The problem is that
they wan
Hi,
I just installed Debian Linux and have some questions about lilo. I used
Linux a few years ago and the way lilo worked then was that when you
booted the machine, you got a LILO: prompt and then could type linux, dos,
or whatever to boot the desired operating system. There was also a way to

Hi,
I get to the point in the Debian install where it asks to make a boot floppy.
Everything else seems to be ok, but it keeps
giving me errors when trying to create the boot disk. I'm not sure what the
error is and I know the floppy is good because I
just formatted it under Win98 and can crea
Hey,
I have a 3COM 3c905TX network card and a Real3D StarFighter video card. When I
boot my machine, the PCI probe gives both of the cards the same IRQ number.
However, the network card is on bus 0 and the video card is on bus 1. Are the
different bus numbers because the network card is PCI
Hi,
I'm having a couple of problems installing Linux on my machine. The problems
are revolving around two pieces of hardware, my ethernet card and my video card.
My ethernet card is a 3com 3c905TX card. During the boot messages, the card
appears to be correctly detected, however I don't seem
Hi,
I have Debian Linux 1.1 and it came with ILU version 2.0.6. I installed
the ILU package and have been trying to use it but am having problems. I
tried to run the server from the tutorial example and it won't let me
publish any objects. I use ILU on a Solaris machine and I had to put . in
Hi,
I was wondering what the difference is between lib*.so and lib*.a
libraries and is there any way to switch between them? For examples, I
have in my /lib directory libtermcap.so, but when I try to compile stuff
with that library I get an error from the compiler saying that the library

Hi,
This is my third try. The first time I wrote the wrong address to send to,
the second time I got blocked by the "spam filter" because I've never posted
anything before, so third time's a charm, right? Ok, I have Debian Linux 1.1
and the clock displays the wrong time. The time's ok under dos
