It appears that xmcd is not completely setting itself up. When I try
to run progs that want to use the cddb part of it, they complain that
XMCD_LIBDIR is not setup. What should this variable be set to?

I'm having problems getting my remote printing to work when I use true
type fonts. When i was on the #debian irc channel, someone suggested
that I process the print job to raw printer data, and then send it to
the printer. However, I have no idea how to do this. Could someone

Does anyone know of a good MP3 encoder for linux? I have an old copy
of 8hz-mp3, but it takes like 10hrs to rip and encode a cd. I'd prefer
an open source encoder, but am not opposed to a commercial one. I just
want to get one that is fast.

I am having problems with anonymous ftping into my linux boxes. When I
connect, there is nothing visible. However, I have put stuff in the
/home/ftp directory structure.

I'm having printing problems relating to my use of xfstt (true type
server). My printer is attached to a little 486 machine which is being
used as a dialup/print server. I don't have X installed, and don't
have the room or power for it on that machine.
Anyway, is there a way to make it see xfstt
What packages are needed for postscript printing? Someone said that I
may need to install them to fix my printing problem.

I'm having problems with my remote printing and am looking for some
more help. I have got it setup where I can print xemacs, tkrat,
command line, etc. However, if I try to print from Netscape or Star
Office, nothing ever prints. I've checked logs on my little print
server, and don't see anything
Can someone tell me which packages I need to get mysql installed? I
looked up the packages, and it listed about 7 mysql packages. However,
when I tried to install all of them with apt, I was told that some of
the packages conflict, so I'm not sure which ones I need.

First off, let me say thanks to those of you who helped me get remote
printing to work.
Now, I am still having a small problem with the remote printing.
Nothing will print from netscape. I can print using the lp command,
and with most programs (xemacs, tkrat, etc). Any idea what might be
going
I'm having a problem with bind going crazy and continually trying to do
lookups. This is causing my dial up to my isp to stay active. Does
anyone know how to trace down the culprit? This problem just started
recently, and I don't think I've really changed what is going on.

I've just added an NT 4.0 server machine onto my linux network so I can
work on learning it. Anyway, since I've added it, my dial up
connection has been going on continually. It appears to be dns look
ups since it is connecting on port 53. Does anyone know how to stop
this in NT?

I'm having problems with apt and it's removal of packages. I tried to
install xrn (the x news reader) and it installed cnews and inews
removing my leafnode. I then had it reinstall leafnode, since it was
properly configured and working. Of course this removed what I had
just installed.
Anyway,
I there anyway to set the expiration time on read articles? I have
texpire running every midnight, but it is not expiring many articles.
I would like read articles to expire after a week or so.

seem to get it to work. I have a 2.5gig scsi tape drive (Exabyte 8200)
and 2.1gigs on my root partition. When I do dump -0 -f /dev/nst0 / the

I've been able to configure diald to restrict dialing out at certain
times (like after I go to bed). However, if I have the connection up
when the restriction time comes, it will kill the connection. I'm
wondering if it would be possible for diald to prevent dialing out,
but not to kill a live c

I can't seem to get my ip_masq working. I'm running 2.1.131, so I'm
using ipchains. I've set it up the best I can tell from the
instructions, but can't hit anything outside my lan from my win95 box.
Any ideas on what I have not done properly?

Ok, I've gotten my network up, but I can't seem to get ipmasq to work.
I've followed the mini-howto and added the appropriate lines to my
/etc/init.d/network file. However, everytime it tries to run ipfwadm
it croaks. Here are the commands, and the errors:
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm: setsock
I have the CTX VL700 (17") montitor, and have been very happy with it.
Nice on screen controls, and very nice look and feel. Have not had any
problems with it and the ~2 years I've had it.

Has anyone gotten the RivaTNT video chipset to work with quake2 and
linux? I can get the game to run, but when I try to switch it to the
open gl settings for the video, it just freezes. It appears to load the
open gl stuff, but no further.
