Hi, I just upgraded to 2.4.20 and my network stopped working... :(
I Googled around and it looks like there have been quite a few changes with
2.4.20.
At the moment the machine's running with a via-rhine card, but I'd like to
get the 3c509 back again.

The final problem turned out to be that it had not included the
3c509.o in modules.dep, manually inserting it and rebooting caused
it to run OK.
Can anyone suggest why ?
Have you started 'depmod -a' ?
