IceDove vs Kmail

I had a problem this morning, not sure how it happened or what is going on. suddenly I can't send mail from kmail, error, saying plain isn't supported from my smtp server. So I fired up IceDove, configured it the same as kmail for my smtp setup, and mail went out. It also continued to work fine
