As far as the JDK / JRE goes I would stick with the Sun VMs for now. They are
fairly easy to install on Debian (Google for debian java).

I generally stick to gnu-style free software but make an exception and
use Sun's JRE/JDK. I'd reccomend installing it the Debian
way. Tutorials for that are out there but my favortie is at
serios.net which has some other useful Debian how-tos.

This is likely a very simple issue. I've never tried to run a
java .jar library on debian before.
I wonder if it may just be a matter of learning how to correctly
setting the CLASSPATH before issuing the java command on .jar
libraries held in /usr/share/java/. I could not find any
