I bought the Linksys LNE100TX NIC because it claims to be
compatible with Linux (and I believe them). I haven't been too lucky,
though.
I downloaded and compiled the latest Tulip driver without
errors... successful first step.

when compiling
I use this NIC in my boxes, and I _think_ your tulip driver is detecting the
wrong card. What kernel are you using? Mine worked with the kernel's
tulip.c driver as far back as 2.2.1, and it works in 2.2.17 and 2.4 test 7.
