I had the same error.
Totally clean minimal net install.
apt-get install gnome
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc: /usr/bin/X11/X: No such
file or directory
Then had to go xf86config why didnt the
package configure tell me to do that?
And
apt-get install x-window-system

Installing 'xserver-xfree86' here, and allowing dexconf to handle
such questions would have been far more advisable.
