With fglrx-driver package from debian, I didn't have direct rendering,
and xv did not work, so I have downloaded
ati-driver-installer-8.32.5-x86.x86_64.run from Ati site. However,
building of Debian package fails

Install the debhelper package.
This helped to make packages, however even when upgrading with them,
again no xv and no dri.
Not sure about amd64, but Direct Rendering works with 9600 on my machine.

Why not use the fglrx package, It works fine on my Radeon 9600

My original post was about Ati proprietary fglrx driver. Then Mathias
proposed free radeon driver, but with it also no direct rendering. Since
this driver is free software, maybe I should file a bug report about
this? My Etch system is fully upgraded.
I am not sure if it's a bug of xorg driver

I run Etch on machine with Nvidia nForce3 250 motherboard and Radeon
9550 graphics card. DRI is not working neither with radeon, nor fglrx
driver. I tried several versions of fglrx driver and kernel, Debian and
vanilla.
I think it's a bug and that probably is in kernel. I want to file a bug

On my surprise, today I checked again and saw direct rendering is
enabled. It looks like the problem was reaired in some recent kernel
upgrade, but I didn't notice it yesterday, because two days ago I
uninstalled libgl1-mesa-dri, because it was listed by deborphan.
