an installer for an external apps is telling me of missing extensions. These
are "glx_sgix_fbconfig" and "glx_sgix_pbuffer".
As far as I could explore, these are NVidia related libs and belong to some
packages named "glew".

It won't help you now, but the simplest way seems to revert to an backup
taken before the upgrade. A good backup strategy should in future help
with cases like this.

There is nothing wrong with installing non-Debian packages as long as they
install in /usr/local or /opt and so stay out of the way of the
package-management system.

They will only remove files installed by the package management system.

I can't live without the goodies from debian multimedia, and I think it
is impossible to persuade Christian to add vlc back to his repo. This
leavs me no choice but try to install the required libs
