If you use the plugin through a web proxy you'll need to use
sun-java6-plugin because icedtea-gcjwebplugin doesn't respect browser
proxy settings.
Otherwise openjdk seems to work well.

I installed sun-java6 but "java -version" showed version 1.5. Upon further
investigation I realised gcj is also installed on the machine and OpenOffice
depends on it. I have two questions:

confirm, navigate to the "about:plugins" page and make sure you see
itlisted there. You can also try any number of java test sites on the
web. I recommend using one hosted by sun itself.

I have just done a complete, fresh install of Debian 3.1 Sarge.
In the earlier install I created a deb package from the Sun Java jre 5 file in
accordance with instructions provided on a Debian site. My question is: do I
need to create this package all over again to make sure it

I think you haven't screwed nothing, i've noticed problems too with
some java applet running in the browser, usually multimedia java

I finally got back to trying to get Sun J2SE running on my Debian testing
system. It installs / runs fine on SuSE, so I was able to get some work done.
I do want to thank those who responded earlier with the links to how to
integrate Sun J2SE with D

The specific 'editor freeze' problem that you have can be bypassed by
turning off 'version control' in the jws preferences.
