Actually, reverting to linux-image-2.6.32-3-686 brings X back to life,
with discernible error messsages anywhere.
Morale of the story: always keep a few versions of the kernel
installed, you might just need them...

At least on powerpc, KMS in squeeze means no backlight control and no
suspend/resume, so delay this to wheezy.

I believe I've found where the problem was introduced, but I don't have

I failed to Cc control, but that's a good thing.
Since you don't actually need to do any Xorg -configure, I'm
