to save your XF86Config file from 3.x someplace, purge the packages, and
then install the new 4.x series afresh. If you want to revert to 3.x,
purge the 4.x series, and reinstall the 3.x series, and copy over your
XF86Config

Also xfree86 -xf86config -- it makes a skeleton of some sort to be
edited. :)
-xf86config is for specifying alternate config file.
-configure makes a skeleton for editing.

Modules section. I am using Branden's phase 1 .debs (and matrox's
driver) on my dual-head g400max without any problems (running sawfish)
(well, I had to drop down to 16bit from 24 bit because the primary
display showed vertical
I don't think is should "depend", unless libxaw happens to be used much
more often than I think it is. If it isn't used much after install, it
seems silly to require it for install
Perhaps a "suggest" or a "recommend". But "depend" seems entirely too
strong to me.

I downloaded Branden's nice xf86 4.0.1 .debs late september 3rd, phase
1.19, for my woody dual-celeron system with g400 max video card and
Mitsubishi 900u monitor.
The install went as smoothly as I could expect; I got through the
install hicaughs, but I am having trouble
