OK, I got it modal and main closure sussed now except for the fact that it
closes the main program, but the following windows shutdown sequence stops
there. Any ideas?

I was wrong in previous post. You only need to handle WM_QUERYENDSESSION
message.
Can you try it to see error still exist?
