I have the same problem, but in my case Metacity doesn't crash, it freezes. The
only way to recover control is killing X and restarting the session.
If I do that, the compositing manager is off when the session is restarted.

By using nasos method, I identified ghostscript to be the process which is
blocking my memory stick.
in the root directory of the stick were indeed some .ps files which could not
be opened by ghostscript.

I wanted to share a directory, and was asked to install (Samba). When I
clicked "Install" nautilus crashed. I tried to repeat it, and it crashed
again.
Interesting thing is I used to share those directories before the
upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04, but somehow Samba was uninstalled during the
upgrade.
It turns out that this upstream fix still causes a confirmation dialog
to be presented rather than auto-downloading.

Anyway, I was able to reproduce this bug with Greek. Here's what was

a working Samba configuration.
Could someone in the Nautilus team with working Samba configuration test

Cardy's (#38 above) solution works for me in Gutsy.
I am observing the same behaviour as noted above:
- Setting "Super is mapped to the Win-keys (default)" in Keyboard Preferences
causes
Keyboard Shortcuts to accept the Win-key as a modifier
- The displayed result is "Mod4+Page_Down" or similar
