How about special casing the Desktop context menu:
"Eject" for Optical Drives and "Safely Remove" for anything else.
Advanced users can still "Unmount" in the Places sidebar context menu, while
average users will (hopefully) see the eject button and not need to worry about

Thanks Guy, this was accepted upstream in libatasmart. Did you send the
gdu patch to bugzilla.gnome.org as well? Once it's there I can prod
upstream and commit it, and then sponsor both to Ubuntu.

I just updated my ubuntu karmic with the update manager.
After the update was finished, it told me to close all firefox instances, which
I did.

application. application -> accessories -> take screen shot. A half
faded window of the application itself appears. This may be a conflict
